Here were some of them:

It was disorganized.

The maps and signs were inadequate or unclear.

Volunteers were not well-informed, and sent people on wild goose chases.

Scheduling:
In general, a shorter convention meant more schedule conflicts than usual, so people were double-booked and could not attend everything they needed to.

Popular speakers were scheduled in small rooms, so people had to wait a long time to get into sessions and then were sometimes turned away. The rooms on the fifth floor of the Sheraton were infamous. They were so overcrowded at one point that fire marshals or police were called in for crowd control, and there were humongous lines at the elevators. People were allowed up only when other people left. This was not a problem in the EV; events were well-attended but not over-crowded. Mini-workshops filled up but if you got there on the first day you could sign up for anything, and if you came to full sessions you could often get in if people who had signed up didn't show, or you could attend as an observer.

Internet:
Inadequate and expensive internet access. In the hotels, free Wi-Fi was available only in the lobbies, and presenters were required to pay exorbitant fees for computers and internet access in their rooms (I was told over $800 per session!!!!), so many presenters opted to show only screen shots while others just resorted to presenting in the EV, which had constant internet access but very limited space.

Expense:
Well, New York is an expensive city. The convention hotels were expensive, the restaurants were expensive, the convention itself was expensive for those who paid out of pocket. Everything cost more than it would in most smaller cities.Nina Liakoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04497100531617971306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-89182049008804636712008-04-10T00:11:00.004-04:002008-04-10T00:30:38.821-04:00Post-TESOL Reflections - The Ginga MovementI finally could write my reflections on the thrilling experience of meeting the Webheads again and getting to know f2f some others. I will be steadily connecting in the future and will search for the group on Facebook. Perhaps we can meet in tapped in as well, although I need to refresh my memory on how to do this. I picked up a lot of useful information at the conference, but I feel I missed even more. Jeff LeBow's Voicethread is interesting. I have to keep hunting. I have learned how to use a couple of online tools worth exploring: I think any ESL/EFL instructor could use them to engage language learners in creative mini projects. I would like to share these with you:
1. Dvolver: http://www.dvolver.com/live/home.html allows teachers and learners to create and direct their own mini-movies. There are a few easy steps to follow - you can choose your characters, scenes and backgrounds, add text and music and your movie is ready! You can see the one I created for my American Culture students here : http://dvmunca.blogspot.com/2008/04/having-fun-with-cartoons.html

2. Online Comics Generator: http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Choose as many characters as you want, give them a "mood", add a thought or a talk balloon and your comics is ready for printing and using in class (great with elementary students).

3. Screen-o-Matic: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/Need to create a tutorial for your students? Do you want your students to create online projects where they would use their own voice? Try this tool - it's easy and it's free! (I recommend it for intermediate to advanced students)

Check my blog for other tools: http://dvmunca.blogspot.com/
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-20824587137302988602008-04-04T09:22:00.002-04:002008-04-04T09:25:57.078-04:00Thanks Dennis!Dennis, you are so kind! Dennis sent us oodles of beautiful red roses, which were distributed at the webheads' second dinner last night at Becco. I made the reservation. I started last week with a reservation for ten and kept calling back every couple of days as the number rose to fifteen and then twenty and then twenty-four.... People were still adding and subtracting themselves on the day of the dinner, and several just showed up at the restaurant! No matter, because the staff were very kind and flexible. I ordered pad thai, which I like because it isn't too spicy. I was surprised that several people sitting near me had never had Thai food before; it has become very popular in the DC area recently. Here are some pictures of our party at Pongsri Thai:

Mike Coghlan and Rita Zeinstejer at Pongsri Thai

Daf

Vance Stevens and Rita

Michael, Aiden and Daf

Ronaldo Lima Jr and Carla Arena

Teresa and Rita

Rita, Tere, Mike and Daf

Graham Stanley and Carla

Webheads at Pongsri Thai

After dinner, a smaller group headed to the Heartlands Brewery, W. 43rd Street and Broadway, for a beer (in my case, a very expensive bottle of water) and more conversation and webheads style bonding. We are sharing a beautiful spacious room with my colleague Kathleen. We were delighted to find a luxurious bathroom with a plentiful supply of soap, which the PSq did not offer!

After a nap and a shower (lovely), I went to hear Tom Leverett's presentation on writing with blogs (saw Carla there and met Margot, Tom's sister).

Tom Leverett and his sister Margot with Carla Arena

Now I am on my way to the CALL-IS business meeting (I am late). However, I believe we are going to meet in person casually anywhere, anyhow, and anytime during the convention before Wednesday; so, we can agree and decide on a date and time to get together.

I'm really so excited about meeting all of you in person, especially those of you we've never met in person.

Cheers!Buthaina Alothmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06028368714413825813noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-26010063425335792482008-03-30T13:30:00.003-04:002008-03-30T13:32:52.305-04:00The Weather ForecastFor those of you who are still packing your bags, I just checked the forecast for the week for new York City. Spring has not arrived there yet! Wednesday will be sunny and cool (highs in the low 50s), dropping down to the mid 30s at night. Thursday will be sunny too with highs only in the upper 40s (that's pretty chilly!), with a chance of rain in the evening so bring your umbrella! Friday and Saturday will be cloudy with temps in the low to mid 50s, with a 40 percent chance of rain on Friday. It reminds me of Seattle!Nina Liakoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04497100531617971306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-76903886856649348962008-03-26T21:40:00.003-04:002008-03-26T21:45:26.413-04:00Dinner ReservationI just made a reservation for 10 at Pongsri Thai for Wed. Apr. 2 at 7:30. I think there are going to be more people, but there are just 7 of us signed up on the Yahoo Group database! I will be able to adjust the number up or down next week, but I hope the webheads will let me know if they are coming or not!

In the meantime, no one has stepped forward to make a reservation for Thursday night, even though I know that several people (including me) are planning to eat together--somewhere. The difficulty is that once we get to New York, it may not be easy to communicate. We are staying in different hotels, not everyone has a cell phone, and not everyone will have internet access. The only thing I can think of is to post notices somewhere at the EV.

People are starting to pack their bags... I know Rita is flying to Connecticut tomorrow, and I think Ronaldo is arriving in New York for some sightseeing this weekend. Now, suddenly it's less than 2 weeks away! I realized I had to figure out how to get there. Nobody I know is driving up from DC. It's not far, but where do you park once you get there? Nobody wants to be burdened with a car in Manhattan. They just get broken into anyway! Years ago there were exactly 4 choices to get from DC to NY: fly "the shuttle," take the train (the "Metroliner", now called "Acela"), or take the bus: Greyhound or Trailways. Now, there are many more bus choices, although Trailways has vanished. There's the Vamoose Bus which leaves from downtown Bethesda (good), the Chinatown bus which is supposed to be very cheap, and today I found out about the Bolt Bus, a new company which supposedly offers fares for as low as $1. Well, not today for April 2 they don't, but I did find one $7 fare. I must make some decisions and book the tickets. I will go up Wednesday and come back Sunday. Already, the only Bolt Bus available for the return on Sunday is too late, so I will have to take a different bus to come back.

I printed out 2 different webheads logos from the wiki, in 2 different sizes, to stick in my badge. What a great idea! This will help us webheads to recognize each other more easily if we have not already met f2f.

I am trying to think how I can borrow a laptop to take up with me, so I will be able to post to the blog while I am there.Nina Liakoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04497100531617971306noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-82322731095653357472008-01-27T23:35:00.000-05:002008-01-27T23:45:30.088-05:00where to eatMy sister Margot says that restaurants are very expensive in midtown and in general it's worth subway fare to go down to the Village or Chinatown where the cheap restaurants are.

If you do stay midtown, though, she says, walk west to get to all the good restaurants. She mentioned an Ethiopian place, which seems to be off the map, and also the Sushi-Ann which seems to be closer. Actually if I read this right, there are over 3000 of them in midtown west alone.

Looking forward to seeing the webheads! tom-tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17510928206528498553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-57588997553930509842008-01-07T03:12:00.000-05:002008-01-07T07:57:17.434-05:00What TAG should we use, dear tesol2008webheads?When planning any kind of collaborative event among distributed participants, it's wise to establish a tag early on. May I suggest tesol2008webheads?

Once we've fixed on a tag, we'll want to use that tag with all posts made here (along with webheadsinaction, another productive tag, and perhaps tesol2008 to fit in with the larger TESOL picture.

Then we'll want to register the tag at hitchikr and use it for flickr photos and tag everything imaginable, slideshares, etc with this tag.

tesol2008webheads sound ok?Vance Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02294855844850896487noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128410040185578023.post-9471019496755279232008-01-06T10:13:00.000-05:002008-01-07T09:57:19.870-05:00Facebook GroupAt risk of overdoing things, I've just created a wia-in-nyc group in Facebook and sent invitations to all the webheads, TESOLers and WATESOLers in my Facebook contacts.
